Council Balks At Brookman Request For Red Light Discussion

A request by Ald. Jim Brookman (5th) to discuss the issue of Red Light cameras in Des Plaines at city council's next meeting on Jan. 17 was rejected by fellow aldermen Monday night.

That denial by a 5 to 3 vote prompted Brookman to "guarantee" that he will personally work to garner enough signatures on a petition to have the question of whether Red Light cameras should be allowed to operate in Des Plaines on a future election ballot.

Last fall, the city's first Red Light cameras were put in operation at Rand and Golf roads. Brookman has been outspoken about his opposition to the cameras. Hundreds of motorists have received notices that they committed traffic violations at the corner. Each violation comes with a $100 fine.

At Monday night's city council meeting, Ald. Mark Walsten (6th) said the local Red Light program is a "done deal" adding that he won't support rehashing the issue at a future council session. Ald. Dan Wilson (7th) said Brookman's request is reasonable because city council is an open forum where public matters are discussed.

City Attorney Dave Wiltse said if the Red Light issue is to be placed on the Apr. 5 local ballot, a decision to have the matter placed on the ballot must be made before Jan. 18. Brookman indicated that the referendum would be held at a later election.
