(Note:  CAMERA Supportere (cities and vendors) DON'T WANT THE PUBLIC to be able to vote.  That is why you find them using any technicality they can to stop a PUBLIC VOTE.  My hats off to Coast for coming back.  THIS TIME THE VOTERS WILL GET A VOTE!

TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - A petition drive kicked off Thursday evening in an effort to ban red light cameras in Toledo.

A group known as "Coast" met in Toledo's west end with Toledo-area volunteers to begin circulating petitions to get the issue on the November ballot.

If approved, the initiative would force a police officer to be at an intersection and that officer would have to physically write any tickets.

Organizers of the petition drive said the red light traffic cameras are just a way for Toledo to generate money.

"The city is being enriched at the people's misfortune," said Scott Ross, "Coast" volunteer. "They cause rear end accidents and the people need to speak. The government is supposed to serve the people, not the other way around."

"Coast" will need at least 9,000 signatures by August to get the issue on the November ballot. A similar effort was made in 2009, but the group failed to get the petitions notarized derailing the initiative.
