HOUSTON—Opponents of Houston’s red-light cameras packed a community forum Tuesday night to formulate a strategy in their fight to get rid of them once and for all.

“This is taxation without representation,” said one woman in the crowded room reverberating with applause.

The hastily arranged meeting came just a few days after Houston began reissuing red-light camera citations. But opponents who sounded off vowed to ignore the $75 fines in protest.

“It takes courage to stand up against the government,” said red-light camera opponent Michael Kubosh.

The citations had been on hold ever since a majority of voters backed a measure to get rid of them last year. A federal judge recently tossed out the results.

Opponents planned to pack next Tuesday’s city council meeting to force city leaders to put the red-light camera ordinance onto the agenda and up for a vote.

One councilmember already supports the move.

“We could vote on this next week if we decided to,” said At-Large Councilwoman Jolanda Jones.
