No Net Revenue from Congestion Tax (SCAMERAS)

(Ban the Cams note:  For those of you who are not familar with the "Congestion Chage", it is toll on a city street for the "previlage" of going to work or shop during the business day in London.  It is "enforced" using over 200 scameras.  NO transponder set up, and no toll booths (still I believe).  You have to pay when you can that day over phone or I believe in stores that allow it.  (If there are any readers who frequent London CC, please let us know the current low down on the CC) .  Otherwise they send you a ticket.  Total SCAM since they make it difficult to pay.  See here for more info on the CC:  http://www.abd.org.uk/topics/congestion_charging/london_congestion_charge.htm  also see:  http://www.abd.org.uk/topics/congestion_charging/index.htm)

No Net Revenue from Congestion Tax

According to the latest Transport for London Business Plan (for 2011 to 2015), the income over the next four years from Congestion Charging, the LEZ and “Enforcement” of those is almost the same as the Operating Expenditure of those items. Indeed in 2014/2015 they match exactly at £301 million. In that year there is also £7m of capital expenditure so the net overall figure will be a cash deficit.

In other words, enormous sums of money are being raised, all of which goes to operating these
systems (and of course to the profits of the third party contractor, now IBM, who runs them). But that is £300m per annum that comes out of the pockets of Londoners that could have been
spent on other things.

So the next time you hear people say that the Congestion Tax subsidises public transport, just
point them at Table 10 on page 71 of the Business Plan (see www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/abouttfl/investorrelations/1462.aspx
