City Says Intersections Safer After Change

By Dan McKay / Journal Staff Writer on Wed, Oct 3, 2012 Tweet   Mayor Richard Berry says traffic engineers improved safety at more than a dozen Albuquerque intersections by making a tiny change that almost no one noticed — slightly longer yellow lights.

That conclusion is based on data in a study by the Institute for Social Research at the University of New Mexico. The Berry administration hired the institute to study signal timing and crash rates at almost 60 intersections, at a cost of about $25,000.

A key finding: Total crashes fell by 8 percent in the 11 months after the city increased yellow-light times at 18 intersections, the study said.

“It verifies that we did the right thing by increasing the yellows to keep people safer,” Berry said Tuesday in an interview. “It’s making a difference in people’s lives.”...
