Recipients of photo radar tickets protest at Grant and Nathaniel

Colin Craig, of the Canadian Taxpayers Association, and Todd Dube of Wise Up Winnipeg, hosted a protest near the corner of Grant Avenue at Nathaniel Street, Saturday. The pair claim a mobile photo radar unit frequently used at the intersection has been inaccurate.

A group of 30 protesters gathered at the scene of their supposed crimes today, hoping to bring attention to what they feel is a photo radar scam.

They have all been caught with their pedals apparently too close to the metal near the intersection of Grant Avenue and Nathaniel Street and received notices of fines in the mail. And they’re not alone. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has compiled more than 700 cases of allegedly lead-footed drivers who feel they’ve been wrongfully accused.

"We’ve had photo radar for 10 years and we’ve never had so many people question the accuracy of the technology at one particular location," said Colin Craig, prairie director of the CTF, which organized the rally.

The would-be speeders say the location of the photo radar vehicle — on a service road just west of the intersection — leads to inaccurate readings due to the abundance of objects, such as light standards, solid metal objects and bus shacks, that can skew the results.

Todd Dube, founder of Wise-Up Winnipeg, a local watchdog group, said that’s "photo radar 101."

"You don’t deploy mobile radar through a path of large metallic objects," he said.
