Speed cameras go awry but its not their fault

Speed cameras covering  the school zone in front of Pacific Avenue in front of Stewart Middle School were popping off  this morning upsetting motorists who didn;t know what they were doign wrong.

The lights on the  "SPEED LIMIT 20 WHEN FLASHING" were not flashing so motorists thought the  speed limit was th enormal 35 mph.

The cameras, however, were rigged for 20 mph. FLash! Flash!

One upset motoriosts e-mailed The News Tribune: "The city can't have it both ways. You can't give someone a ticket if the WHEN FLASHING sign isn't on."

Sorry, said  Tacoma Police Department spokesman Mark Fulghum, he said said the school had changed its operating hours and  didn't inform the police who set the cameras. The schools sets the school flashing signs..

Chances are, motorists going too fast through the zone this morning will not get a ticket. " Getting your picture snapped does not necessarily mean you will receive a violation notice," he said. "It has to go through a process before a notice is sent out. "

A police officer reviews each flash photograph to make sure there is a violation.

Fulghum said  reviewers were given a heads up Tuesday when police  first heard of the school's hours change and they were reminded again today.  If someone gets a ticket, he suggested they contact Tacoma Municipal Court 253-591-5357.
