Study finds cameras focus on cash
Editorial From: Herald Sun August 19, 2011 12:00AM
THE Herald Sun today presents the evidence that speed cameras are mostly revenue raisers.
Our survey over the past six months shows saturation coverage on roads where there are few accidents.
The police might argue that the presence of the cameras has contributed to road safety, but residents disagree. There has been no sudden drop-off in accidents following cameras being installed.
The speed cameras are a cash cow for the Government, which has benefited by $101 million from mobile speed camera fines in the past year.
Fixed speed cameras and red light cameras bring this figure up to $250 million.
Speed cameras should be placed in high-accident areas. The cameras should be about safety, not money.
