Springfield, OH POLICE MISLEAD public on RLC "safety" claims. THEY FAILED TO MENTION AMBER INCREASE

Springfield, OH POLICE MISLEAD public on RLC "safety" claims.  THEY FAILED TO MENTION AMBER INCREASE A YEAR EARLIER in latest PR stunt!

(special thanks to Gary for the link on this).

Recently Springfield, OH officials made the claim that RLC "improved" safety and "reduced violations.  (link for propaganda piece:  http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/crashes-decrease-at-filmed-intersections-1268111.html)

Quote:  In the five years since Springfield installed red-light cameras, crashes at those 10 intersections have been cut almost in half, from 92 to 48, according to police records.

Likewise, citations have dropped. From when the cameras were installed in May 2006 until the end of that year, 10,343 red- light violations were issued. For all of 2010, 7,773 citations were issued, police said.

Besides not breaking out the "violations" or if any of the crashes were EVEN RLV RELATED.  (The LAPD pulled that stunt earlier:

Quote:  For example, one LAPD claim was that five fatal accidents occurred at specific intersections before the red-light cameras were installed, and none occurred after.

Reality: two of the five accidents were not red light related, he says, and a third involved a drunken driver who zipped through despite a camera there, mounted by a previous vendor. The fourth, "caused by a young distracted driver," likely would not have been prevented by a camera.)

The scamera side failed to mention the FACT THAT THE AMBERS WERE INCREASED by one second!  http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/local/springfield/Longer-yellow-light-means-less-tickets

SUCH  A INCREASE in AMBERS DRAMATICALLY REDUCES RLV!  This has been seen in multiple towns where done!  In fact the 1 plus ITE in Georiga has obliterated many RLC operations!

Update:  In fact the TTI back in a 2005 study found that "An extra second yielded a 40 percent collision reduction."  http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/02/243.asp

IT IS COMPLETELY MISLEADING AND DISHONEST NOT TO MENTION THAT THE ABMERS WERE INCREASED IN THE LATEST PR STUNT SPRINGFIELD DID.  IT IS TYPICAL OF THE SCAMERA SIDE TOO!

Here is the REPRINT!

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - A split second was helping drivers save money in Springfield.

The city added one extra second to all of the yellow lights at the red-light camera intersections.

Police said they saw a drastic drop in the number of red light camera citations after adding the second.

In 2006 an average of about 1,700 red light camera tickets were issued per month..

Now that monthly average has dropped to 667 tickets for drivers who ran red lights. Police said they saw their biggest drop after adding one extra second to the yellow light.

"We've set them all at 4.6 seconds except for Spring and North. That's set at five seconds because of the grade at the bottom of the hill," said Springfield Police Sgt. Brian Radanovich.

Even though it was less revenue for the city, police said they were glad driver behavior was changing.

Even drivers who hated the red light cameras admitted they now slow down when they see the light turn yellow.

"I make sure I stop, or make sure it just now turned yellow when I go through. The camera is doing it's job, but I still don't like it," said Springfield resident Kymber Sharp, who had been issued two citations for running red lights in the last year.

Police said they had also seen a 30% drop in traffic accidents since they installed the red light cameras at select intersections.
