Camera-equipped dummy police officers have been set up in 13 locations across Bangkok to catch drivers who violate traffic rules, Metropolitan Police deputy chief Phanu Kerdlarppol said on Thursday.

He said there were people who wanted the fake police officers - all named Pol Sgt Choey (choey is "passive", in Thai) - to be placed in different areas to keep motorists from breaking the traffic rules when real traffic policemen were not on duty.
"Pol Sgt Choey will no longer be passive because they now have closed circuit television cameras and speed cameras inside them. They are now called Intelligent Pol Sgt Choey," Pol Maj-Gen Phanu said.

The mannikin law enforcers will help reduce the number of traffic violations and encourage people to be alert when driving, he said. (Ban the SUREE, that is why you are hiding it in a dummy!)

The Intelligent Pol Sgt Choey were initially being placed at 13 locations where traffic laws are broken frequently and in areas where accidents are frequent, especially near intersections, approaches to  bridges and roads with solid white lines.

"The Intelligent Pol Sgt Choey will keep an eye out for vehicles that are speeding, crossing solid lines and squeezing in at the foot of bridges," the deputy chief said.

The security cameras use radar and a wireless communication system. They can transmit images over a two to five-kilometre radius to smartphones and tablet computers used by police, he said.

Bangkok Dummies
written by Jen , October 19, 2011

I have mixed feelings about Sgt. Choey. Many cities in the United States have hidden red traffic cameras; and it is terribly annoying to get a traffic violation ticket in the mail and not remember when it occurred. The other frustrating thing is that these cameras make it hard to fight a traffic ticket in court. I currently live in Bangkok where the traffic is horrible everyday and at all times. If Sgt. Choey makes a difference in traffic patterns, then I will be grateful for the change. However, it would also be nice if traffic fines would be set across the board. I was recently in the car with non-Thai friend when she was stopped by the Bangkok traffic police. They wanted a huge fine. I asked a Bangkok lawyer about this who confirmed that we got cheated. Many traffic-related matters need to be cleaned up in this city.
