SC aid could be cut to towns with speed cameras 
 

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina House of Representatives takes up a measure next week that would cut state aid to communities using cameras to nab speeders.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the budget proviso would apply to Ridgeland, the only town in the state using such cameras. Ridgeland has been using a manned camera on Interstate 95 since last year.

The provision by Sumter Rep. G. Murrell Smith says state aid to communities would be reduced by the amount of the fines collected from tickets. Smith says he thinks the town is violating state law.

The I-95 cameras have resulted in a federal lawsuit and an effort to ban such cameras in the state legislature.
