"SPEED cameras do lie" would seem to be the message sent out by a magistrate yesterday.
Senior Constable Faye Pitman disputed driving at 106km/h on the Dandenong bypass on EastLink in 2009.
And, after she produced a witness, the magistrate decided to accept her evidence that she was doing 98km/h.
High school student Erin McKernan, who was in the car on work experience, backed up the policewoman.
This would seem to set a precedent. The speed camera evidence has always been accepted by courts unless it can clearly be demonstrated that the camera was faulty.
If the evidence of a witness in an offending vehicle is to be accepted, it is likely to cause challenges in hundreds of speed camera cases across the state.
While the evidence of the police officer and the schoolgirl in this case is not in question, the possibility of false evidence being given in other cases has to be considered.
The decision given yesterday needs to be appealed with all possible speed if the credibility of the speed camera system is to be maintained.
In spite of the opinion of the Auditor-General, most people regard speed cameras as revenue-raisers and will be encouraged to think they can be successfully challenged.
