ALL fixed speed cameras in Portsmouth will today be switched off.

The decision follows Portsmouth City Council’s withdrawal from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Road Safety Partnership.

Cllr Jason Fazackarley, in charge of transport in the city, said: ‘As of today there will be no more fixed speed cameras in the city.

‘We made the decision to pull out of the partnership because our government speed camera grant was withdrawn. The partnership then said we could stay in it without paying a fee, but that was because they were going to hike the penalty charges for drivers and we didn’t want to do that.

‘We’re hoping to get about £106,000 back from the partnership that we’ve put in. We’ll then reinvest that in road safety.’

He added: ‘The cameras won’t just be taken down and nothing put in their place. We will look at the flashing speed signs and other measures.’

Cllr Fazackarley also said the council decided to withdraw from the partnership because of the row with police over enforcing 20mph speed limits across the city.

As reported in The News, the council is considering taking Hampshire Constabulary to court over the issue.
