Police officer against speed camera

HAMILTON, Ohio, April 14 (UPI) -- An Ohio police lieutenant is speaking out against his city's mobile speed camera after more than 900 tickets were waived by the chief.

Hamilton Police Lt. Marc McManus told the City Council Wednesday he has concerns about the cameras that were highlighted when Chief Neil Ferdelman voided tickets issued from the camera during the April 2 Mid-American Soccer Classic in Joyce Park, the Journal-News, Hamilton, Ohio, reported Thursday.

Ferdelman said he canceled the tickets because of the special event going on in the city.

"Obviously this is an issue that creates a lot of disagreement, not only amongst the community, but even within the police department," McManus said. "There's even difference of opinion over whether the citations be voided or not. That's a decision the chief had to make and I respect that."

The lieutenant said he believes many people did not realize the unmarked white sport-utility vehicle was a police vehicle.

"Out of those 900 people evidently none of them knew it was a speed vehicle, so obviously it wasn't slowing anybody down," he said. "I personally believe it's more about monetary gain than it is about safety."

McManus said he believes a marked patrol car with a radar gun-wielding officer would be a more effective deterrent against speeding.
