Officer takes on speed camera

A FREEWAY speed camera that reaped $4 million in fines last year will be challenged in court by a police officer today.

The officer is expected to fight two fines on the basis that testing and a witness would prove the car could not have been speeding.

She received the fines for allegedly travelling at 108km/h past a camera at the Dandenong Bypass bridge on EastLink in Keysborough.

She is expected to argue that a witness will say her speedometer showed she was under the 100km/h limit when she passed the camera.

It is believed the speedometer was calibrated by the police vehicle testing branch in 2008.

The officer is also expected to argue that the car's cruise control was set on 98km/h when she was fined.

She is also expected to argue that she had the car tested by a colleague, using a laser speed detector, after she became suspicious of the speed camera's accuracy.

Her legal fight is backed by the Police Association.

In October, when the officer's challenge was revealed, the police union said it was "not in the habit of backing lost causes".

The case is listed to be heard in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court today.

Last month, another police officer had a court win when he beat an eight-year-old speeding fine.

In January, Police Minister Peter Ryan promised to test the accuracy of all speed cameras. He also allowed publication of mobile speed camera locations.
