The city’s war on automobiles has just gone aerial.

The Department of Transportation is “aggressively pushing” to install speed cameras to fine drivers who bust New York’s 30 mph speed limit.

Team Bloomberg’s plan may appear reasonable at first. But don’t give this crew the benefit of the doubt for a second: Safety isn’t the name of the game.

Speeding cameras are yet another front in DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan’s four-year auto-kampf.

Don’t forget the context: Major streets turned into “pedestrian plazas.” Roads carved to bits to make way for bike lanes that go unused.

 
And bridge and tunnel tolls on the rise, with a final aim of congestion pricing to keep drivers off the roads. Which, of course, severs the city’s arteries and constricts the flow of commerce and culture.

Equally troubling, speeding cameras are ripe for abuse as a revenue-raising tool — a universal case in cities and states that have already adopted them.

But the city can’t install any cameras without approval from Albany, which rightly nixed a similar plan last year.

This scheme deserves the same fate.
