AAA Mid-Atlantic to Challenge Accuracy, Legality of Speed Camera in College Park
Arguments will be made at Wednesday press event.

AAA Mid-Atlantic is calling on Prince George's County officials to remove a speed camera in College Park that it alleges does not comply with state and county laws and standards, according to a statement prepared by the motorists' advocacy group.

Representatives from AAA Mid-Atlantic and one ticketed motorist will challenge the accuracy of the camera, the legality of its placement, and "criticize the city's seeming lack of commitment to the right of due process," according to the release.

This will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at 3300 Metzerott Road, College Park, near the location of the camera in question, according to Kristin Nevels of AAA Mid-Atlantic Public & Government Affairs.

Two representatives from AAA Mid-Atlantic will be accompanied by motorist Richard LaDieu of Lanham. According to a Patch article last month, LaDieu was able to get tickets he received along Paint Branch Parkway thrown out in court.

“They’re not accurate. It’s nothing but extortion .… You guys are implementing a law that’s unconstitutional,” he said before storming out of the hearing room.

The press event follows a recent public hearing where residents clashed with police over the accuracy of the technology, as the county plans to roll out 100 new speed cameras.

Law enforcement officials from Hyattsville, College Park, Forest Heights and Seat Pleasant praised the cameras at the public hearing for significantly reducing collisions and getting drivers to slow down near school zones.
