EL PASO, Texas -- When Gracie Goetz opened her mail on Saturday, she said she got an ugly surprise.

“I got this official-looking scary thing that looked like I was in trouble,” Goetz told KFOX on the phone.

She lives in Austin, but somehow got a red light camera ticket in El Paso, even though she said she never drove her car in the Borderland.

“I really was kind of puzzled,” Goetz said.

She said when she opened the envelope, the picture of the car caught running the red light was not hers.

“They had all of my information, a description of my car, which is a black four-door hatchback, but the picture of the car on the paper was actually a silver car,” she told KFOX.

Frustrated, Goetz called a number on the notice but got voice mail. After doing a little more surfing on the Internet, she was able to contact representatives at Photonotice.com, who later connected her with officials who said they would dismiss the ticket.

Red light cameras in El Paso are operated by REDFLEX Traffic Systems.

Daryl Petry, a spokesperson for El Paso police, said the tickets are reviewed by an officer to ensure that they are valid. He said mistakes, such as the case of Goetz given a ticket wrongfully, have only happened roughly two times since the program started in 2006.

He said red light camera tickets are considered a civil violation and do not reflect on a person’s driving record. The tickets cost $75.

There is an appeal process through an administrative hearing.

Petry said 81,123 red light camera tickets have been issued in El Paso since 2006. In 2009, 24,744 red light camera tickets were issued. And so far in 2010, Petry said 6,370 red light camera tickets have been issued.

KFOX also tried to contact REDFLEX officials, but a response was not given at the time this story was published.
