MUKILTEO, Wash. – Just over 1,900 signatures were turned over to Mukilteo City Hall Wednesday in an effort to reverse the city council's decision to install red light cameras at two intersections.
The grassroots petition drive, led by anti-tax activist Tim Eyman, presented the signatures to create Initiative 2, which could lead to a public vote in August on the controversial camera issue.
"We've gone door-to-door and the opposition to these things was amazing," Eyman said. "People want to decide themselves."
Last month, the Mukilteo City Council voted three-to-three to install the cameras. Mayor Joe Marine acted as the tie-breaker to move forward with adding two traffic monitoring cameras at two separate intersections - one at Harbor Pointe Blvd. and Hwy 525, the other at Olympic View Middle School, which would only be active in the school speed zone.
"We are doing this for the safety of our city," said Marine. "We are confident this will reduce accidents and protect drivers."
Mukilteo City Council members will discuss the red light camera issue again at a meeting on June 21. Councilmember Kevin Stoltz requested the council reconsider the issue because he was not able to vote last month. Council members could re-vote on June 21, which could reverse the decision to add cameras.
The signatures submitted to City Hall will be verified by Snohomish County officials.
Marine also says he is consulting with the city attorney to decide whether an initiative can even be created against red light cameras.
