Mukilteo has slammed the brakes on red light cameras. The city council has decided to repeal its 2010 ordinance that authorizes installation of cameras to catch speeders and red light runners.
Last November, voters decided to restrict the use of the cameras, which snap photos of license plates so the city can issue tickets.

The city council was somewhat defiant about whether the public could make such decisions, and councilmembers voted to reconsider and rework the red light camera law. The council also wanted to wait for a Supreme Court decision on legal challenges to the initiative.

Then, suddenly on Monday night, councilmember Randy Lord decided to give up the fight.

"I am tired of the battle. I believe it's time to get this thing behind us and figure out better ways to solve this problem," said Lord.

Other councilmembers agreed and the council voted 5-to-2 to not send the ordinance back to the public safety committee for reworking.

"There's a whole lot of people who aren't terribly excited about the red light camera and this will be a message to tell them that we agree to that," said Lord.

Now, the council plans to find less expensive, less controversial ways to improve safety on the Mukilteo Speedway.
