VICTORVILLE • Though a team of attorneys, city officials and Tea Partiers hoped to have an answer within 60 days, four months have passed without any indication Victorville can terminate its contract for 10 red light cameras before that agreement expires in 2014.
However, those in the fight remain hopeful they’ll find a legal loophole that will get Victorville out of its contract with Redflex Traffic Systems without paying a hefty fine or facing litigation.
“The City Council wants to do the right thing for the citizens of Victorville and within the law. The city attorney is very open to ideas and solutions,” said Brandon Wood, a Victorville attorney who was brought on through the local Tea Party movement to help fight the cameras.
“Redflex is unfortunately not so reasonable,” Wood continued. “They are only interested in making as much money as possible before the cameras are removed. It is very certain the cameras will be removed; whether they are removed at the end of the contract or removed early is yet to be determined.”
In March, a split City Council approved a partnership between the city attorney’s office and Wood to explore strategies for early termination.
“I’m not a fan of the red light cameras, never have been, and would like to set them go,” Mayor Ryan McEachron said. “I’m waiting on them to come back to me with some sort of proposal that the Council can discuss.”
Wood and other Tea Party supporters have said they believe the way Redflex tickets are prosecuted violates civil rights, primarily because the accused don’t have the opportunity to confront their accuser.
Intersection approaches still monitored by red light cameras:
• Amargosa Road at Bear Valley Road
• Bear Valley Road at Amargosa Road
• Bear Valley Road at Industrial Boulevard
• Bear Valley Road at Mariposa Road
• Bear Valley Road at Hesperia Road
• Hesperia Road at Bear Valley Road
• Hesperia Road at Silica Road
• Green Tree Boulevard at Seventh Street
• D Street at Seventh Street, eastbound
• D Street at Seventh Street, westbound
Tips for dealing with red light camera tickets from attorney Brandon Wood:
• Fight every red light camera ticket. Do not just pay the $490 fine.
• If you lose, file an appeal. The appeal is done on a judicial council form and is fairly easy to fill out.
• If the photo with the ticket is of someone other than the registered owner of the vehicle, you do not have to tell Redflex who the driver is. You can simply respond, “That’s not me.”
