VICTORVILLE • The city attorney is teaming up with a lawyer from the local Tea Party movement in hopes of finding a legal loophole so Victorville can terminate its red light camera contract.

The partnership was approved by a split City Council amid fighting on the dais and threats of a recall effort from members of the Tea Party who packed City Hall on Tuesday night insisting the cameras are unconstitutional.

“I’m in favor of turning all the cameras off tomorrow,” Mayor Ryan McEachron said, to loud applause from the audience.

Councilwoman Angela Valles, who led the charge against taking the 10 cameras down, went a step further: “I say let the litigation begin and let’s get rid of the red light cameras.”

Victorville signed a five-year contract with Arizona-based Redflex to install and operate the cameras. But the city hasn’t made any profit off the deal and has dealt with mounting opposition from residents, and so staff has been looking at options for an early termination of the Redflex agreement that expires in 2014.

City Manager Jim Cox said the contract appears “fairly iron-clad,” with no way for Victorville to buy its way out.
