TORONTO -
In a move that could drive in an additional $2.5 million in revenue, the city’s audit committee hit the gas on changes to Toronto’s red light camera system.

Councillors on the audit committee approved Toronto auditor general Jeff Griffiths recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the red light camera program.
Right now, the City has 87 cameras that move around within 114 locations.

Some of the recommendations approved by the committee include ensuring road markings at red light camera intersections are properly maintained so tickets can be issued  to those photographed committing violations and looking at cost-sharing opportunities of the program with other parties that benefit from it, including the province and the car insurance industry.

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday said he was “quite disturbed” the city has lost a lot of money over a long period of time and didn’t hear about these issues until 2011.

“For the sake $30,000 worth of paint, painting the lines on these intersections, 114 of them, for that $30,000, we’ve lost over $600,000 a year because those tickets were of no use,” he said. “The camera would take a picture but the white line wasn’t clear enough to take them to court so those tickets never proceeded, we lost $600,000 for the sake of $30,000.”

Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon asked staff for a report comparing the current location of all red light cameras, which are evenly spread across the city’s wards, with a placement criteria solely based on traffic volumes and collisions.

“The bottom line is this is about safety, it’s not about money,” McMahon told the committee.

(Ban the Cams comment:  OH PLEASE!  In fact lets look at one study done nearby a few years ago that showed the RLC MADE INTERSECTIONS MORE DANGEROUS!  http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/02/288.asp)

Quote:  A closer look at the data found in this government-sponsored report show that intersections monitored by cameras experienced, overall, a 2 percent increase in fatal and injury collisions compared to a decrease of 12.7 percent in the camera-free intersections that were used as a control group (page 21).
