They said stop
By The World Editorial Board
Saturday, November 12, 2011
Wenatchee’s city government and a nearby Superior Court insist its citizens do not have a right to vote, yes or no, on the use of red-light cameras. Legal opinion notwithstanding, the city’s leaders might take note of what happens when people do have a say.
Voters in Monroe, Longview and Bellingham, agreed it is best for their governments to take their cameras and put them, well, somewhere dark. These were strictly advisory votes, mind you, with no mandatory consequence, but the anti-camera sentiment was overwhelming — 65 percent no in Monroe and Bellingham, 60 percent in Longview.
Of course these cities could chose to start or continue collecting the automatic fines the cameras impose, but they run the risk of a corrosive dive in credibility that comes from standing against the obvious will of their citizens. Is the money worth it?
This is the opinion of The Wenatchee World and its Editorial Board: Publisher Rufus Woods, Editor Cal FitzSimmons, Chief Financial Officer Janine Bakken and Editorial Page Editor Tracy Warner.
