Stop red-light cameras

It was with great concern when I read about upcoming legislation to authorize the use of red-light cameras in 19 of our state's cities. Our elected officials continue to prove that they are quite adept at separating us from our money. Do not let the rhetoric about "safety" being the major reason for these cameras cloud the fact that red-light cameras have always been about revenue.

If safety was a major concern, then why don't they study the accident-reducing method of merely extending the yellow light time by as little as 1 second, which has been shown to markedly decrease accidents. No one is saying anything about the increase of rear-end accidents where cameras are installed from last-minute panic stops by motorists when they realize that they might be on "Candid Camera." And the "no points" promise is merely to make the program's odds of political survival easier and to make it less likely that you will contest the ticket and just pay up.

These cameras are just a bad idea, and I sincerely hope that there's an outcry from the populace about these things before it's too late.

Ban the Cams comment:  IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO FIGHT BACK!  KEEP BEING THE SQUEAKY WHEEL.  The more lies we expose of the scamera side the BETTER!
