Springfield City Council tonight (6-13) adopted a budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 and it includes something unexpected.

NEW HIRES

City officials say because sales-tax revenues are up this year it can hire people for 12 jobs that have been frozen for years.     For the first time in three years, the City’s sales tax revenues have ended the fiscal year up 2.28 percent over last year.

RED LIGHT CAMERAS

City Manager Greg Burris told council members the city is suspending efforts to re-activate its red light camera system.  http://articles.kspr.com/2011-02-17/red-light-cameras_28553548

Burris says that's because of a court ruling declaring the St. Louis red light system to be in violation of state statutes.  http://www.kmov.com/news/local/Judge-rules-St-Louis-red-light-camera-ordinance-is-void-122549959.html

Burris says St. Louis is appealing the ruling, but it will take at least six months for a decision on the appeal.
