A Springfield City Council member is preparing for a fight against the city's deactivated red light cameras.
As the council prepares to take up the issue, Tom Bieker is pushing for an ordinance that would get rid of the cameras for good. He says the cameras would cost people in Springfield more than a million dollars each year to run and maintain. He also says safety is a big concern. Bieker says statistics show when the cameras were on, accidents at the intersections went up. He says statistics show there was a 10 percent increase in injury accidents and an 11 percent increase in rear end accidents as people 'panic-braked.'
Bieker says the city can make the intersections safer just by tweaking the length of the yellow lights. He also says putting up signs that educate drivers about red-light running would help. The city council's next meeting is Tuesday, January 17th. No word yet if the red light camera issue will be on the agenda.
