ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - The city of Atlanta has been operating some of its red light cameras without authorization from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Some motorists who paid a $70 fine might get their money back.

The DOT told some city officials that the red light cameras at some intersections didn't comply with the law.

The red light cameras at the intersections of Freedom Parkway and Boulevard and Piedmont Road and Monroe Drive have come under scrutiny.

The lights were installed at intersections based on crash data. The city of Atlanta submitted those intersections for lights, but the state turned them down.

The DOT has asked that the lights be removed and the money from fines be returned.
