SENATOR SAYS 13 LOBBYISTS WILL ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT RED LIGHT CAMERA BILL

Brian Hauswirth Reporting

Saying his job is to protect rights and liberties, a state lawmaker plans to introduce legislation in January that would outlaw red-light cameras in Missouri. State Sen. Jim Lembke, R-St. Louis County, has constitutional concerns, noting points are not taken off your license when you're ticketed by a red-light camera:

Red-light cameras are currently used in several Missouri cities, including Columbia, Hannibal, Arnold, Florissant and Hazelwood. Lembke emphasizes he wants motorists to obey the law:

Lembke says the Missouri Municipal League and camera companies oppose the bill, and adds there will be 13 lobbyists in Jefferson City working to defeat it.

Lembke also outlined his court battle during his appearance on "KWIXLAND this morning". A ticket was mailed to him after someone in St. Louis ran a red light while driving Lembke's car. The Senator told listeners a family member was driving the car, not him. Senator Lembke will not identify the relative because he considers the cameras to be unconstitutional. He's appealing the case and hopes to take it to the Missouri Supreme Court.
