ROYAL PALM BEACH — Village council members officially drove the final nail into Royal Palm Beach's red-light camera program Thursday night.

The council unanimously scrapped the village's camera ordinance for the second time, making the repeal official.

The village had been using red-light cameras since November on Royal Palm Beach Boulevard at the intersections with Crestwood Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard. But those cameras led only to warnings, not fines.

Last month, council members unanimously declined to incorporate a state law into the village codes that would have allowed Royal Palm Beach to charge $158 per violation to the owners of cars caught running red lights.

Council members said they have received a great deal of opposition from residents about the cameras, and they questioned whether the monitoring improved safety at the intersections.

Village Manager Ray Liggins has said he has no plans to bring up a new red-light camera ordinance anytime soon.

Village Attorney Brad Biggs said he has spoken about the repeal to the private vendor who owns and installed the cameras, Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions. But they did not discuss details of when the vendor might remove the cameras.

West Palm Beach and Palm Springs continue to use their red-light cameras to issue fines. Palm Beach County is working on installing cameras for at least one unincorporated intersection.
