Route 59 construction could signal end of red light cameras in Naperville
By Mick Swasko TribLocal reporter Today at 2:22 p.m.

Planned road widening and work on Route 59 could end red light camera enforcement in Naperville next  year, amounting to a $1.1 million loss in annual revenue, city officials said.
City Manager Doug Krieger said land acquisition has already begun on Route 59, and the city is expecting to remove red light cameras at Diehl Road and Aurora Avenue on the route in November 2012 in anticipation of the work. That would leave one camera at Ogden and Aurora avenues, which Krieger said would not pay for itself.

“We were looking for at least cost-neutral operations,” he said. “We would not run the program with that single intersection.”  (Ban the Cams note:  IE. PER TICKET HYBIRD, "discount" if they don't "cite" enough).

Krieger said collectively, the cameras bring in $1.1 million in annual revenue for the city.

When construction begins and the Route 59 cameras are no longer in operation, there are no plans to look for additional intersections to operate photo red light enforcement.
He said the city has budgeted for the loss in revenue.

“We’ve factored in a planned reduction for our next budget year,” he said. “While certainly significant, it’s not something that would be insurmountable.”

No specific budget cuts or revenue streams have been identified to make up the loss, he said.
The cameras have reduced the number of accidents at the intersections, but Krieger said with the loss of the enforcement, he hopes the construction in the area will make drivers more cautious.
If the city wants to replace the cameras at both Route 59 locations, it will have to conduct a three-year study of traffic and accident data and provide it to the state once the construction is complete.
