Future of red light running cameras in Collier County

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - Will red light cameras stay in Collier? The number of citations are down more than 80% from a year ago and revenue is down too because the county isn't citing right on red violations.

The county and vendor ATS issued 3 thousand fewer citations in August of 2010 than in August of 2009.  That's a difference of $350 thousand.

"It's a business they're doing it for the money," said motorist Alan Nathanson.

"I'm glad to know they've gotten real with it," said driver Linda Glazebrook.

But, all drivers we talked with say busting drivers on-camera for blowing through red lights should stay.

"When you're going through a red light that could cause an accident, a serious one," said Nathanson.

"I think that's worthwhile, said motorist Joe Coppola.  "That's I think the real danger."

Camera vendor American Traffic Solutions, made 85% of their profit from right on red turns.  If they can't break even many worry the cameras would be gone for good.

"They'll lose money that way," said Nathanson.

ATS is on a month-to-month contract with Collier County.
