MUKILTEO — Backers of a citywide initiative to force a public vote anytime the city wants to install red-light or speed-zone cameras got some good news Wednesday.

That’s when the Snohomish County Auditor certified initiative petitions it received from the city of Mukilteo as having the 1,793 valid signatures required by law.

The City Council is scheduled to discuss the Tim Eyman- sponsored initiative next Wednesday.

“We are preparing a letter and will be returning the petitions to the city of Mukilteo either this afternoon or first thing in the morning,” said Garth Fell, county elections manager Wednesday.

Tim Eyman, who lives in Mukilteo and is known mostly for his statewide anti-tax initiatives, is sponsoring Mukilteo Initiative 2 to force a public vote anytime the city wants to add red-light or speed-zone cameras. The initiative also would limit fines.

Volunteers turned in petitions last month, but elections officials determined too few signatures were valid.

The council could vote to put the initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot, adopt the initiative as law or take no action.

Last month, the council reversed a May decision to hire an Arizona company, American Traffic Solutions, to install and operate red-light and speed-zone cameras along the Mukilteo Speedway.
