Red Bank's New Mayor Wants to Get Rid of Red Light Cameras
Submitted by Nordia Epps on November 16, 2010 - 10:24pm. News | Government & Politics | Hamilton County News

Will Red Bank be getting rid of its red light cameras?

That's one of the first things the new mayor wants to look into.

Monty Millard got that job tonight.

He's been a part of some controversy...including three arrests in allegations involving his wife while going through a divorce.

He's also named in the law suit over the firing of former Police Chief Larry Sneed.

But tonight citizens and city leaders want to move forward.

John Roberts, "After much consideration and much prayer for the last seven days, I'd like to nominate Monty Millard as our next mayor of Red Bank"

Commissioners voted 3 to 2 to give former Vice Mayor Monty Millard the City's top position.

The new mayor immediately got sworn in to much applause.

Red Bank Resident Delores Vinson says, "Monty Millard has done an awfully lot, devoted a lot of time and energy to this city. He has had some unfortunate publicity and while I certainly think he can rise above it my hope is that we can truly, everybody, forget that and move forward and not sully Red Banks reputation any more."

Commissioner Ruth Jeno nominated and voted for Greg Jones.

She called for board members to put aside their differences and work together.

Jeno says, "I think that if we could respect each other and put the past behind and move forward. I think that's the best thing for the City."

The new mayor wants to establish an economic development board and cut the empty buildings on Dayton Boulevard by 50% over 2 years.

And he's taking on the red light cameras.

He wants to look at how much it would cost to break the contract and make a reasonable decision

Millard says, "I have been up and down Dayton Boulevard in the last week face to face with business owners and overwhelmingly they say, I've asked them what can I do to help you with your business and they say take out the red light cameras. The red light cameras are killing our business with all the negative publicity."

Out going Mayor Joe Glasscock lost his spot on the commission to John Roberts.

The cameras came up as a campaign issue.

Glasscock says, "I was beat to death about cameras and I still think they're good for the city. I think they're lifesavers. I think they're not for profit."

Millard nominated Floy Pierce for vice mayor but Jones won the job by a vote of 4 to 1.

Pierce even voted for him.

All the charges against Millard have been dismissed.
