Push to kill red-light cameras draws praise from Sharief

By Scott Wyman March 18, 2011 12:26 PMBroward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief is welcoming a move Thursday in Tallahassee to ban the use of cameras to catch drivers who run red lights.

Sharief failed last month to persuade her commission colleagues to support repealing the state law that allows red-light cameras. Sharief said at the time that she saw the camera not as promoting traffic safety but a budget-balancing move by cities.

On Thursday, a committee in the state House of Representatives narrowly approved legislation to outlaw the cameras that dozens of cities now use, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Sunrise. The close vote, though, suggests the measure faces long odds of clearing the Legislature.

“I am glad to see the Red Light Repeal Legislation continue to sail through the Legislature,” Sharief said in a statement released to the news media Friday. “Although six of my colleagues are against the repeal, I will continue to advocate repeal of these devices as local governments and the state have not made safety their first priority but rather generating more revenue from our residents. Senator Garcia, Representative Corcoran and Representative Trujillo should be commended for their leadership on this issue.”
