FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE;

Port Lavaca Citizens Against Red Light Cameras
Wednesday January 25, 2012 @ 9:30am
... City Secretary's Office, Port Lavaca City Hall, 202 North Virginia Street

This Wednesday the citizens of Port Lavaca will have spoken once again to demand a removal of the dangerous and abusive red light camera system in our city. The council has already worked with the camera vendor to throw out our first petition in violation of the city charter. We have little doubt they will work together to save the revenue generating program once again even though we have followed all legal requirements and city requests for this petition. This new petition is a direct referendum, which would repeal the city ordinance that allows the cameras to operate. According to the city charter, when the city secretary certifies a referendum petition as sufficient, the ordinance is suspended until the election. This would mean the camera program should end as soon as the city secretary certifies to the council that our petition is valid and has enough signatures. According to the charter the cameras would not be able to operate unless the citizens vote to save the program. We predict the city will once again abuse the city charter by claiming this is a matter that would be a breach of public safety and deny suspension of the ordinance until the election. If the city does so we will know the city will do anything they can to save a failed program that has increased accidents and issued fraudulent tickets for drivers for going through green lights. If the council was truly concerned about a breach of public safety they would have never authorized the cameras and would have saved the additional accidents the cameras have caused.

We also expect the camera company's astroturf group, Texas Traffic Safety Coalition, which does not have a single board member in Port Lavaca or even in Texas, to try to buy our election. Instead of allowing the citizens to decide the issue without interference we predict the council will stand silently by while this group funded by camera money will sue and harrass petition organizers and buy advertisements and mail outs filled with half truths and flat out lies about the camera program. We look forward to being the fifth city to vote out these cameras in Texas where they have never survived a public vote.
