Eyman trots out red-light camera initiative

Mukilteo's Tim Eyman is well known across the state for his initiative efforts, but now he's turning attention to an issue that hits close to his home -- red light cameras.

Eyman was at City Hall Monday to announce an official city-wide initiative to ban red light cameras in Mukilteo, unless the voters agree.

"(City officials) just got through jamming this thing through last week," Eyman said. "The citizens of Mukilteo think this is outright rude and we think that voters should have the final say on an issue that is as unpopular as this one."

It's the first time Eyman has targeted a city for an initiative and says what better place to start than his hometown.

"It's clear red light cameras are all about the money; they are the crack-cocaine of municipality," Eyman said. "It's the chance for them to make money off their citizens and view them as ATMs."

Eyman said efforts would be better spent on signage, speed bumps and speed indicating lights in problem areas than "picking pockets citizens".

The effort is part of the statewide organization called bancams.com and petitions are available there.  Eyman says he needs 1,804 signatures from Mukilteo city residents to get the issue on the August primary ballot.

"I think every other city will be watching to see how regular citizens feel about red light cameras when they actually get to vote on them," Eyman said.
