PEORIA, AZ - Peoria is the latest Valley city to shut off its photo enforcement cameras, affecting four major intersections in the city as of Monday morning.

Here's a list of affected intersections:

  • Thunderbird Road and 75th Avenue
  • Thunderbird Road and 83rd Avenue
  • Union Hills Drive and 83rd Avenue
  • Bell Road and 91st Avenue

Spokesman Jay Davies with the Peoria Police Department says the city ran a pilot program from 2008 to 2010.

The number of accidents went up roughly 29 percent in those three years, he said.

But it's not clear if accidents went up because of the red light cameras, Davies added.

The city decided not to renew its contract with Redflex because the number of accidents haven't decreased, Davies said.

Redflex operates the photo enforcement cameras in Peoria.

"The cameras didn't produce results for public safety," he said.

Davies said the city will go back to a traditional enforcement approach which includes motor officers and speed monitor trailers in problem areas
