Paris TN: No plans for traffic cameras in Paris TN

Paris won’t be getting any traffic cameras soon, as long as Paris Police Chief Chuck Elizondo has anything to say about it.

The cameras that have recently spurred debate and complaints in McKenzie are part of a system that Elizondo wants to avoid.

“About two years ago, there was a company that tried to sell us the system with speed cameras and red light cameras. If I remember right, they would get half the money (from the tickets) and the police department would have gotten the other half,” Elizondo said.

“I would much prefer to just have one of my officers who’s in a patrol car give out any ticket that needs to be given out,” he said.

One reason for relying on the live officers, he said, is that traffic offenders might be involved in some other kind of criminal activity, too.

“I want the person who’s breaking the law to be stopped at that point,” he said. “We don’t know. That person could be intoxicated.”

Elizondo said McKenzie is not the only town in this area to use the cameras — Huntingdon, Martin and Union City also have them now.

“Another reason we don’t need them here — talking about the red light cameras — is because Paris doesn’t have that one really bad intersection like some of those towns have,” he said. “If we had a tremendous number of fatalities at any one intersection, that would be a reason to put those red light cameras up.”
