NM Gov BACKS RLC BAN!
http://www.kvia.com/Global/story.asp?S=12172613
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson says he's skeptical of an "excessive, big brother approach to public safety" and supports a New Mexico Transportation Commission decision to ban red-light cameras on roads it controls.
The commission voted unanimously Thursday to prohibit red-light cameras and mobile enforcement vans on state or federal roads over which it has jurisdiction. It gave cities 60 days to remove any cameras operating in those areas.
Last year, Richardson signed a measure passed by the Legislature to standardize the use of red-light cameras throughout New Mexico.
The measure also gave part of the proceeds from fines to the state.
The governor said at the time he opposed the camera approach, but signed the bill to make sure all communities were treated fairly.
