Valles calls for regular financial statements

New Victorville councilwoman questions competency of city staff at first meeting

VICTORVILLE • Councilwoman Angela Valles came to her first meeting Tuesday night with guns blazing, questioning the competency of city staff, calling for the remaining red-light cameras to come down and asking that Victorville figure out a way to fill its eight vacant deputy positions.

“Do you think she’s got some people squirming?” one regularly attending resident asked after the meeting, pleased someone was questioning “business as usual.”

One of the new councilwoman’s major concerns was why the city’s finance department can’t provide regular statements, debt schedules and investment reports so the council can make more informed decisions.

“We pay the city manager a great deal for results, not excuses,” Valles said, asking that those financial records be included in each future agenda.
