New Orleans state representative has filed several bills that would ban or require a vote on the use of red-light traffic cameras throughout the state.

State Rep. Jeffery Arnold, D-New Orleans, is behind the move. Last year he introduced legislation to outlaw red-light traffic cameras, but the move was derailed, in part, by Lafayette leaders, Arnold said.

One of his bills would require a vote of the people before red-light cameras can be used. Arnold said today that he believes it has a better shot at passing into law than the previous proposed bill.

Communities, like Lafayette, that already use red-light cameras and speed vans would not be grandfathered in, he said.
