POMPANO BEACH The city won't be using cameras to go after red light runners anytime soon, even though its staff has put together an ordinance it planned to present to commissioners in March.
Commissioners on Tuesday directed staff to put the proposal on hold because of enforcement and collection issues that have surfaced in red light camera programs in other cities.
A state bill would repeal the law passed last year, while a significant amount of tickets have been successfully challenged in court.
A report prepared for the city last year estimated it could reap more than $6 million a year by placing the cameras at five intersections. However, some cities have found the cameras aren't producing the expected revenues — and in some cases they are losing money.
