Senator Lembke Applauds Judge’s Ruling Concerning Red-Light Cameras

Jefferson City — State Sen. Jim Lembke, R-St. Louis, welcomes the preliminary ruling by a judge that states St. Louis’ red-light camera law is invalid.

“The people have spoken about this issue on countless occasions,” Sen. Lembke said. “Finally, judges are starting to see the light on this miscarriage of justice. Red-light cameras are a pure money grab, and do not improve safety at our intersections.”

In 2009, three people who were ticketed by red-light cameras filed a lawsuit, claiming the constitutionality of the city’s law. On May 20, 2011, Circuit Court Judge Mark Neill ruled the city of St. Louis had no authority to enact red-light camera laws. Another hearing is now set for June 13, 2011.

“While I understand this is a preliminary ruling, and the city will continue to enforce its current ordinance, this is a major step forward,” Sen. Lembke said. “St. Louis put this law into effect back in 2005. Since then, more than 267,000 notices have been issued, and some people have been charged no more than the regular $100 fine. I hope the next hearing will put an end to this illegal procedure.”
