Lakeland Protest Against RLC 4/17/2010

LAKELAND, Florida - They've been called a cash cow and unconstitutional.
Red light cameras have been going up at intersections all over the Bay area. Today, protestors gathered to say they want the cameras taken down, after a ruling in Adventura called them illegal.
"These things don't improve safety. They don't improve driving habits or anything. In fact, they've been shown to decrease the level of safety on the roads," said protestor Henry Stowe.
Stowe says one of today's protestors had a lien put on her house when she didn't pay a ticket.
The city of St. Petersburg will be the latest to add the cameras, after approving them earlier this month.
The group is planning more protests. For more information, visit BantheCams.org.

I was at the same intersection of Florida Ave and Memorial (where protest took place). The light was red and I was making a right-hand turn. A police officer whom I am acquainted with advised me to come to a full stop and "roll back" before making a right turn on red. I did so, however the cars to the left of me were over the line and I had to proceed slowly to check for safety. I received a notice in the mail stating I "may be receiving a ticket at a later date because it was under review". A few weeks later I did receive such ticket but it was too late to contest. I know I did not break the law and I have not paid the ridiculous ticket cuz it's a big scam and they will have to do much more to get $ from me. Whomever came up with this idea is a moron. I can't tell you how many times people have to speed up to avoid a ticket to slam on their breaks to avoid the same. This needs to end!!!

i was fined for a right on red at us 92 and n. fl ave.i pulled up past the white line so i could see oncoming traffic before i turned.i was on my way to the hospital to see my wife who was admitted the day before.it was a fri.,and i was off because my company is only open 4 days a week because of the economy.this is the first infraction i have had in over 30 yrs.the cameras take the human element out of the circumstances, and a $125 fine for this is outrageous.

i have been victimized by the leaders of this city also with a red light camera. Coming home from work i approached a corner, the very same corner where the protest took place saturday, ther were 3 lanes of traffic to my left and all three lanes had the lead car over the stop line. as i moved ahead of the cars to see if it was safe to make my right turnn the camera got me. although the wording was that i entered the intersection without stopping, the video shows this to be false. i did pass the stop line but did not enter the intersection until a full stop was made. the angle of the cameras(from the rear) do not show the full picture it leaves alot for interpretation. and when the interpretor is a city official it looks like a conflict of my interest as well as another bit of fodder for the Cash Cow. I have been driving for almost 40 years and have never had a ticket. funny how they install these things and even granny is a violator
