Lakeland Should Take Note of Arizona, Put Red-Light Cameras on Ballot

I read with interest the article Friday concerning the state of Arizona eliminating speed cameras, and camera opponents saying they "are more about making money than safety" ["Ariz. to Drop Speed Cameras on Highways," page A3].

After having 36 fixed cameras and 40 vans equipped with these cameras since 2008, at a cost to the taxpayer, it took just two years for Arizona to realize it was not meant for safety but a moneymaker instead.

This only shows what can happen when the elected officials listen to the people along with using good judgment in not using the code word safety as a tool to increase revenue.

The city of Lakeland, using the code word safety, has installed red-light cameras to increase revenue, and more than $2 million already collected proves the point.

If these cameras were working for better safety, there would be no revenue collected from these cameras. It didn't Lakeland them long to realize it needed to do something and the city issued right-turn-on-red citations if you went two inches over the stop bar.

What the people of Lakeland need to do is start a grass-roots drive and have these cameras placed on the ballot box, and let the people vote to get these cameras eliminated. (Other cities have done it with success.)

Some elected officials of Lakeland have found a lifetime home in office and, because of this, have a created a mind-set that this is their city and they don't need to listen to the people.

The ballot box is the only chance the people of Lakeland have, because Lakeland's leaders are not listening.
