Knoxville might put up NO Right TURN ON Red to make up for loss from TN RLC law on Right turns.

Personal Comment:  Knoxville seems to be suffering financially from not being able to cite for right turns on red, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE VIOLATION BREAKDOWN.

I bet a GREAT part of their "tickets" are right turns on red.

Otherwise, why the URGE to put up NO RIGHT TURNS ON RED AT RLC INTERSECTIONS????

Think it is 50%, 60% for right turns????  If there is anyone from TN please let us know!

East TN cities with red light cameras not ticketing for right on red

Every city in East Tennessee that currently has red light cameras is not issuing citations for drivers caught on camera making a right turn without stopping.  However, if an officer witnesses the illegal turn at any intersection, including those with cameras, drivers could be cited.

"Since July 1, we have not issued citations for vehicles that failed to come to a complete stop for executing a right turn on a red light with our automated enforcement program," said Knoxville Police Captain Gordon Catlett.

"State law still requires a vehivle or a driver to come to a full and complete stop before executing a right turn on a red light," Capt. Catlett continued.

The City of Knoxville has 15 intersections with red light cameras.  Those brought in revenue of $2,008,650.05 to the city in 2010. Capt. Catlett said that number will likely drop now that police aren't ticketing for no right on red at intersections with cameras. Those have been installed since 2006. The contract was renewed in November, 2008 and expires in 2013.

Capt. Catlett served as a consultant for lawmakers throughout the legislative process of getting the new red light law on the books.  He said he is surprised by the version of the law that passed, "We were led to believe that this particular standard would not be incorporated into legislation that was being acted upon."

Capt. Catlett isn't alone in his expectation, that the new law would only apply to new red light cameras.

Officials in Oak Ridge also said they are enforcing the new law with their existing camera at the intersection of New York Avenue and the Oak Ridge Turn Pike.  City Attorney Ken Krushenski told 10News the city is considering installing "No Right on Red" signs at that intersection, and researching how they can enforce the law in the future.  Ban the CAMS note: YOU MEAN GET AROUND IT DON'T YOU!

Some drivers agree with police enforcing the new law.

"I think if a cop stops you, an actual cop, then that's all right. But, I don't' agree with the cameras at all," said Oak Ridge driver, Blake Donald.

Officials in Morristown and Farragut also said their officers are enforcing the new law with their current red light cameras.

Police want to remind drivers, camera or not, it is still illegal to turn right on a red light without stopping.

State Senator Jim Tracy, from Shelbyville, has asked the state's Attorney General for his opinion on the new law.

Ban the Cams note:  NO doubt the cities want to IGNORE the right turn on red RLC ticket prohibition.  Can't wait to see the "definitions" the towns come up with. We have pleanty of EXAMPLES from Florida where in one county (Hillsborough) you can do a rolling right turns on red, in another town (Temple Terrace) if you do you get a RLC ticket.  http://www.banthecams.org/20100728358/CH-13-Report-TEMPLE-TERRACE-and-LAKELAND-FL-STILL-CITING-FOR-NON-Dangerous-RTR-in-VIOLATION-OF-LAW.html

BOTH USE THE SAME VENDOR, ATS!  IN FACT TEMPLE TERRACE IS IN THE SAME COUNTY TOO!
