Red Light Camera News
IT IS REALLY ALL THE ABOUT THE MONEY! San Bruno might say no to RLC due to lack of violations.
(my thanks to the Camerafraud Facebook site for this story).
No red-light camera for San Bruno?
May 11, 2010, 01:37 AM By Heather Murtagh Daily Journal Staff
Red-light cameras will most likely not become active at San Bruno intersections as city staff believes the safety measure would result in a $30,000 loss annually.
In June 2009, the San Bruno City Council gave the go-ahead for staff to negotiate a contract with Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems for red-light cameras. Since that time, at least two San Mateo County cities have lost $2,000 to $3,000 monthly on similar contracts due to the lack of ticket revenue generated. As a result, San Bruno Police Chief Neil Telford is suggesting the city not move forward with installing cameras. The City Council will discuss the program tonight.
A contract with Redflex would cost $5,500 per month to lease the equipment. Staff enforcement and other expenses are estimated at $2,000 per month, bringing the program total to $7,500 monthly. Telford estimated San Bruno would lose $30,000 annually, $90,000 over the three-year contract, if it installed the cameras.
The San Bruno Police Department reviewed collisions from Jan. 1, 2005 through April 30, 2009 to determine areas where red-light cameras would be most effective. During that time, the intersection of El Camino Real and Sneath Lane topped the list with 76 collisions, followed by 72 at El Camino Real and Interstate 380. Fifty-two accidents occurred at the intersection of El Camino Real and San Bruno Avenue; 49 occurred at El Camino Real and Tanforan Way; and 43 were noted at Skyline Boulevard and Sharp Park Road.
(Ban the cams note: notice they didn't bother mentioning if those crashes were RLV crashes. Further no mention of WHAT THE THEMES WERE. DUI, NOT PAYING ATTENTION, ETC. that RLC WON'T BE EFFECTIVE ON).
In January, Redflex evaluated intersections to see where red-light cameras may work. Redflex found only one intersection, El Camino Real and Interstate 380, had a marginal number of straight-through red-light violations over a 12-hour period, 20.
(Ban the Cams Note II: Redlfex needs from one document I saw about 35 a day PER INTERSECTION. I will post it later. WASN'T THIS SUPPOSE TO BE ABOUT "REDUCING VIOLATIONS,,,,,,,,,,,Funny the city is getting cold feet because they will LOSE MONEY! Shows you how much they really "care" for citizens safety. NONE!)
Red-light cameras have caused issues in a number of cities recently. San Carlos decided to end its contract due to losing money. Burlingame is currently losing money. Despite this, Belmont and South San Francisco red-light programs are both beginning.
At the same meeting, the council will hold a public hearing to discuss increasing garbage rates by 4.93 percent starting July 1. Recology San Bruno’s proposal requests the increase for the next fiscal year. If approved, residents using a 64-gallon toter would see their bill go from $44.68 to $46.88. Commercial customers with one of the size cans would see the weekly cost increase from $56.80 to $59.60.
Lastly, the council will consider increasing cable rates 14 percent to nearly 15 percent depending on the service starting July 1. Basic cable, for example, is proposed to increase 14.86 percent from $52.95 per month to $60.82, a $7.87 change.
The council meets 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 11 at the Senior Center, 1555 Crystal Springs Road in San Bruno.
