Sullivan states position on red light camera amendment
Monday, August 22, 2011
City Council Member Mike Sullivan has been a longtime opponent of the citys red light cameras, and even more so since last Novembers election when almost 54% of Houston voters rejected them. In an effort to respect the will of the voters, and to stop this endless game of turning the cameras on and off, I offered an amendment at this Wednesdays council meeting that called for the physical removal and dismantling of the cameras, said Sullivan. The intent of my amendment was to provide a way for us to actually take the cameras down.
Red light opponents feared that Sullivan's amendment could have unintended consequences, enabling the cameras to actually be kept up. I'm clearly not a lawyer, said Sullivan, but I am just trying to find a way to respect the will of the voters who have made their desires known. In an effort to move forward to remove the cameras, Council Member Sullivan consulted with City Attorney David Feldman late Thursday night and drew up an amendment that would provide a legal manner in which the cameras could be taken down.
It is disappointing that Mayor Parker ruled today that my amendment was out of order, even though it would have given her the tool to accomplish what she claims to want to do, concluded Sullivan. Not only am I disappointed, I am frustrated that the Mayor called a council meeting to vote on repealing an ordinance and no action was taken.
Council Member Sullivan fully intends to offer up the revised amendment that he and City Attorney David Feldman previously discussed at next week's Council meeting. I hope the Mayor will respect my right to present my amendment, stated Sullivan. I am committed to this fight, regardless of how long it goes. I will not rest until every camera is put in a box and shipped back to the contractor, ended Sullivan.
