OCTOBER 05, 2011 Oldsmar puts the brakes on red-light cameras
OLDSMAR -- Ten months after unanimously adopting an ordinance to authorize red-light cameras in Oldsmar, city leaders decided not to install them. Well, at least, not yet.

Tuesday night, the City Council was poised to approve a contract with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based American Traffic Solutions to install cameras at four intersections. But council members decided to postpone their decision after Mayor Jim Ronecker shared concerns about the accuracy of the technology. He cited a recent media report involving a man who received a ticket from one of the vendors, but didn’t run a red light in the first place.

Most of the council was swayed by his argument. But Council member Jerry Beverland, who is staunchly in favor of the cameras, said the council’s decision should be based chiefly on safety.

Ronecker said the decision is more complicated. “It’s a matter of do we trust the technology,” he said.

The council plans to solicit feedback from the public and hold a workshop to discuss the topic more thoroughly.
